Communication and Information Studies

“Hi! My name is Varisha, I am 20 years old and I am in currently in my second year of Communication and Information Studies. I have been living in Groningen for two years now. My week includes attending practicals and lectures, working on assignments and preparing for classes. Luckily there is enough time for hobbies, friends and more! Last year I was an active member of the study association ‘Commotie’. Together with my committee we organised a trip to Dublin. Commotie helped me to get to know more people who are also studying Communication and Information Sciences. Besides Commotie, I am also a member of a student association.

Why Communication and Information Studies?

Communication takes part in every aspect of society, for instance: business, politics and health care. Because communication is so important in everyday life, I was interested in how it really works. Communication and Information Sciences in Groningen focuses on the language perspective of Communication. Since I was a young girl, I was interested in language. I liked writing poems and small stories. For that reason, I thought it was interesting to learn more about it. And of course not only about grammar, but about how we are able to communicate with language!”

Hi! My name is Tamara, I am 22 years old and a third culture kid who mainly grew up in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. I am a second-year student in the Communication and Information Studies (CIS) bachelor's degree programme as well as a teaching assistant, student ambassador, co-host for a radio show and an active member of the CIS study association, Commotie. As I am halfway through my degree programme, I'm quite busy doing school work and studying.

Additionally, I do lots of art and craft projects, journal, go with fellow Commotie members friends to fun events and lectures, and, very importantly, spend an evening or two a week relaxing and taking care of my plants.

Why Communication and Information Studies?

After relentlessly looking for a programme that fits one of my many interests, I felt like something was a missing every time. However, the Communication and Information Studies programme aligned with my interests in philosophical language and linguistics, marketing, sociology, and multi-media, while still leaving enough time outside the programme to pursue all my other interests and skillsets. I decided on this programme because, to me, it is the perfect baseline degree to evolve into whatever other career I wanted: communication, research, marketing, English language, etc.

Why Groningen?

On a whim, I decided to apply to a university in the Netherlands, knowing no matter where I go, there is an international environment with great teaching facilities in English. As strange as it sounds, I knew even before I visited here for the first time that Groningen was for me. There is something special about this small city where I would want to spend even the rainier days in. The buildings, the environment, there is something for every type of person here.

Future

I personally want to go into management or communications realm, but as my interest in the English language grows from this programme and from being a teaching assistant this year, my plans for the future are ever-changing and dynamic. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me. When I got into the programme, I didn't realize how many opportunities would open up for me and my future and if I am only a second year student now, maybe we can see what opportunities the third year holds for me as well :D

Golden Tip

My number one tip is to make sure you are involved and interested in your study programme, to sign up for your study association (usually they provide summaries for courses, opportunity desks, events to meet new people, etc.), to reach out to second/third year students to give you advice if you need any, and to make time for yourself. University life isn't the easiest, so taking care of yourself and giving yourself time some off is very important. The university is flexible and will support you, so don't worry, no matter what you choose, everything will be okay.

Hey! Mijn naam is Merle Kooij en ik studeer communicatie- en informatiewetenschappen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ik heb vorig jaar mijn eerste jaar met veel plezier afgerond en zit nu in mijn tweede jaar. Naast studeren ben ik ook op veel andere vlakken actief in de stad. Zo doe ik een commissie bij de studievereniging Commotie en ben ik actief bij een studenten roeivereniging. Ik onderneem veel met mijn vriendinnen en huisgenoten en werk hiernaast ook.

Waarom CIW?

Toen ik een aantal jaren geleden voor een moeilijke studiekeuze stond, heb ik veel verschillende voorlichtingen bezocht. Hierbij vond ik CIW veruit het leukst. Het meest interessante vond ik hierbij het echte communicatie gedeelte. Hoe overtuig je iemand door middel van communicatie? Of hoe informeer je klanten of aandeelhouders op de juiste manier door middel van taal? Zelf vond ik het daarnaast vroeger altijd leuk om te presenteren en voorlichtingen te geven en veel met mensen te praten, waar deze studie natuurlijk perfect op aansluit.

Er eenmaal van overtuigt om CIW te gaan studeren heb ik specifiek gekozen voor de Nederlandstalige track van deze studie. Ik heb hiervoor gekozen, omdat ik graag zo veelzijdig mogelijk opgeleid wilde worden, met kennis over taal en communicatie in het Nederlands en in het Engels. Daarnaast vond ik het belangrijk dat ik alle mogelijkheden in dit vakgebied voor mezelf open kon houden en dat ik in theorie na mijn Bachelor evenveel kansen zou hebben op zowel de Nederlandstalige als op de Engelstalige arbeidsmarkt.

Waarom Groningen?

CIW kun je natuurlijk in meerdere steden in Nederland studeren, maar toch heb ik ervoor gekozen om in Groningen te gaan wonen en studeren. Toen ik voor het eerst in Groningen kwam voelde ik me direct thuis omdat het een grote stad is die toch heel klein voelt. Ondanks dat Groningen een stad is, zit toch alles lekker dicht bij elkaar en kent iedereen elkaar. De gezelligheid en knusse uitstraling die Groningen kent, ben ik nog nergens anders tegen gekomen en maakt Groningen voor mij uniek.

Naast de leuke stad speelt de studie natuurlijk ook een rol. Persoonlijk vind ik de vakken die de RUG aanbiedt voor deze opleiding het meest interessant, maar dat is natuurlijk een persoonlijke voorkeur.

Toekomst

Nadat ik mijn bachelor heb afgerond wil ik graag een master gaan volgen in een andere stad. Zoals het er nu naar uit ziet wil ik de master Persuasive communication in Amsterdam gaan volgen. Mijn ambities zijn om na deze master bij een groter bedrijf of organisatie te gaan werken en mezelf te blijven ontwikkelen gedurende mijn carrière.

Gouden tip

Hoe cliché het ook klinkt, luister vooral naar jezelf en laat je niet te veel beïnvloeden door anderen. Jij bent uiteindelijk degene die deze studie moet gaan volgen. Ga vooral doen wat je leuk en interessant vindt en denk na of je een toekomst voor jezelf ziet in dit vakgebied.
