“I chose the IRIO programme because I wanted to understand how the world around me works and, ultimately, to learn how to improve it. By learning how power structures work, how laws guide behaviour and how economic policies influence us, this programme seemed well-fit for me. Moreover, there is space to choose extra courses and to go abroad. Currently, I am writing my thesis on the effects of the euro area crisis on European Union policy and I am going abroad to South Korea next year.

Next to studying, I have participated in the vibrant student life of Groningen by doing a board year as the Chairman of Study Association Clio and by being involved in the Erasmus Student Network. These were all great opportunities to learn how to work in an international team. Studying IRIO in Groningen will submerge you into an international environment of like-minded, yet wholly diverse students and academics. With the experience and academic skills from Groningen, I hope to work for an international organization or an NGO.”

“When I was searching for the right degree programme, a combination between law, economics and political science, I stumbled upon IRIO. So far, it is my experience that IRIO is more than simply combining these subjects: it provides us with the necessary tools to understand how they are all connected in this complex world. A personal challenge has been the responsibility of getting the weekly readings done, which requires some discipline, but also provides us with great freedom to make our own schedule. This comes in very handy considering that Groningen, which is as “studenty" as a place can get, offers everything you could ask for, including the friends from all over the world you are bound to make here!”

Mijn naam is Sofie, ik ben 19 jaar oud en sinds 2020 studeer ik International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In mijn vrije tijd ga ik graag tennissen bij de tennisvereniging Veracket, doe ik een commissie bij de studievereniging Clio en neem ik deel aan activiteiten van mijn studentenvereniging Dizkartes.

Waarom IRIO?

Ik heb gekozen voor IRIO, omdat ik geïnteresseerd ben in de manier waarop de internationale wereld werkt. Ik wil graag leren hoe landen en internationale organisaties met elkaar omgaan, hoe internationale samenwerkingen ontstaan, maar ook waardoor internationale conflicten ontstaan. IRIO lijkt mij hiervoor de beste studie, omdat het programma vakken bevat over geschiedenis, politiek, rechten en economie. Door die verschillende perspectieven krijg je inzicht in alle aspecten van de internationale wereld. Bovendien zorgen die perspectieven voor een heel gevarieerde studie die nooit saai is! Daarnaast ben ik ook erg enthousiast over de vreemde taal als onderdeel van het IRIO programma, omdat ik denk dat extra talenkennis later goed van pas kan komen in een internationale carrière. Uiteindelijk is een internationale carrière mijn einddoel en de studie IRIO lijkt mij goed beginpunt om dat te bereiken.

Waarom Groningen?

De belangrijkste reden dat ik aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen wilde studeren is omdat hier IRIO aangeboden wordt. Na lang vergelijken kwam ik tot de conclusie dat ik een combinatie van geschiedenis, politiek, rechten en economie het interessantst en het nuttigst vond voor mijn toekomst. Aangezien er in Nederland geen andere bacheloropleiding bestaat met deze specifieke combinatie besloot ik mij in te schrijven bij de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Inmiddels ben ik ook helemaal verliefd geworden op Groningen. Het is een niet al te grote stad, maar wel vol met studenten, dus er is altijd wel iets te doen!

Toekomst

In mijn toekomst zou ik graag een internationale carrière willen, nadat ik natuurlijk eerst mijn bachelor IRIO af heb gerond. In het derde jaar mag je zelf een minor uitkiezen en hopelijk kan ik dan voor het eerst een half jaar in het buitenland gaan studeren. Na de bachelor zou ik graag een master gaan doen in het buitenland om me verder te specialiseren in één van de perspectieven van IRIO. Uiteindelijk hoop ik ooit te kunnen gaan werken in de diplomatie, maar dat is duurt nog wel even. Eerst blijf ik nog genieten van het studentenleven in Groningen!

Gouden tip

Je studiekeuze maken is moeilijk, het is niet voor niets dat de term ‘studiekeuzestress’ bestaat! Gelukkig staat er super veel informatie op het internet. Je zou bijvoorbeeld kunnen opzoeken welke vakken je precies hebt gedurende de studie en dan zou je per vak kunnen bedenken of je dat interessant zou vinden. Met al die informatie kun je de verschillende studies heel goed vergelijken. Vervolgens kun je de open dagen en Een dag student gebruiken om sfeer te proeven en vragen te stellen. Uiteindelijk komt het dan zeker goed met die studiekeuze!

Bonjour! My name is Hugo; I am from the southwest of France and 21 years old. I am currently in my second year of the Bachelor International Relations and International Organization (IRIO).

Next to my studies, I try to have a complete social life in which I practice several sports: football, rugby, rock climbing and surfing. I also enjoy making music with my guitar, piano, ukulele or harmonica. I like attending events that are organized by my programme’s study association CLIO, in which I was involved in the photo and multimedia committee last year. Finally, I am now excited to start as a student ambassador for IRIO within the university.

Why IRIO?

After studying French law for almost two years, I was looking for a broader programme where I could fully study in English and that would give me the possibility to learn about various subjects, such as law, economics, history, politics. However, the feature that convinced me to apply for this programme were the compulsory language courses that allow me to learn a foreign language intensively. I picked Chinese and studying this language is so much fun!

The international aspect of the programme is also extremely interesting. You meet people from all over the world and get to know more about different cultures, which is exactly what I needed after spending 20 years in the same town. During your studies, you learn about the world and how it is constructed. You will start to feel closer to this world, which at first seems so unreachable.

In my opinion, one of IRIO biggest strengths is the variety of assignments. You will have to choose your own topics to write your essays, but you will also have to shoot videos, prepare presentations, and write papers in groups.

Why Groningen?

I visited Groningen for the first time in 2018. I did not know at that time that I was going to pursue my studies there two years later. However, I loved the city and its amazing atmosphere. The city is full of national and international students and the opportunities are endless. Everything is reachable at more or less 10 minutes by bike. The student life is really furnished, you have so many places and activities to discover!

Future

My future is still unsure. Since the programme is very broad, your interests change every time you learn about a new subject. I am really interested in learning different languages, and I am also very interested in East Asia and political economy. But for now, I would love to go on an exchange in South Korea for my minor next year.

Golden Tip

If you are interested in studying IRIO, I would advice you to attend the various events organised by the university such as the open days or “student for a day” to form your own opinion on how your future university life as an IRIO student would look like.

Finally, do not stress about your future, life is long, and you will find your passion. Listen to your heart!
